Michael Jackson Tribute

Description

This drawing was done a few months ago, but it’s a particularly special piece that I thought I should share here.

Back in September 2009, Kraken Opus offered Michael Jackson fans around the world to submit their tributes (artwork or written) for a chance to be featured in the official MJ Opus book. My older sister quickly found out about this (she’s a bigger MJ fan than me ^_^; ), and wanted me to draw something. At first, I didn’t really want to do it because I felt that I wasn’t good enough to draw something that would even stand a chance to be in the Opus. But after much persuasion from my sister, I decided to give in. I figured that even if I didn’t make it in, just doing something for Michael would be enough for me.

However, I can’t draw real people—I can only draw manga and anime style. And drawing Michael in that style is quite impossible for me. My sister, nevertheless, found a way around it. She suggested that I draw Spike the Rabbit, the cartoon alter ego of Michael in the Moonwalker short film. So I practiced drawing the character by rewatching the film several times (I love watching it ever since I was a kid!), and came up with several pencil sketches of Spike (and one sketch of Alicia Florence from ARIA while I took a break). The deadline for the contest was coming up, so I didn’t have time to outline and color it. (Although, even if I did have the time, I would end up not coloring it in, since I’m not that great at colors… )

My sister wanted the picture to be bold and eye-popping, and I thought of the Static Shock segment in Moonwalker. So I created a jagged and “shocking” look for the drawing. My sister really liked it, so we finally submitted it to the website.

When December 7th morning came (the day of the announcement of the winners), my sister eagerly checked the Opus site. I was washing my face in the bathroom, but I could hear her excitedly yelling my name across the house and calling our dad over to the computer room. It was a strange turn of events, because somehow my drawing ended up being one of the 26 artworks to be featured on the Opus! I was very skeptical about it, saying “Really?” and “No way” over and over again. Actually, I still feel that way now. ^_^;;; It feels so unreal, even when I have the actual Opus book in my hands, and seeing my drawing right there on the page. There are so many talented artists that had their art in the Opus, and having my drawing there side-by-side with them is pretty crazy for me.

A-and that’s the story behind this piece. It was an amazing experience, and I blame my sister for it. XD She’s the one that pushed and motivated me to do this, so she deserves as much credit for this drawing. :3

If Michael ever sees this drawing from heaven, I hope it would make him smile. ^____^
